Final Sanding & Cleaning
The last surface prep before finish — a final 150-grit inspection, thorough dust removal, and a wipe with Rubio Raw Wood Cleaner so the oil bonds to clean, bare wood.
Final sanding inspection
Walk the surface in raking light to catch any missed scratch, swirl, or proud epoxy. Touch up at the appropriate grit, but the ceiling is firm: 150 grit max for dense hardwood with Rubio. 120 is ideal; 150 is the smoothest you should go.
Vacuum & compressed air
By now the cracks and voids are all filled and sanded flush — so this is about dust, not debris. Vacuum the whole surface, then blow out the filled epoxy seams, the live edge, and every corner with compressed air; fine dust still hides along the fill lines and in the grain of the live edge. Vacuum again to collect what the air kicked up.
Rubio Raw Wood Cleaner (vs. a tack cloth)
Rubio's own recommendation is their Raw Wood Cleaner, and it's the safer choice for a reason: it lifts the finest dust electrostatically and leaves no residue, which is exactly what Rubio's hardwax oil needs to form its molecular bond. After final sanding, wipe the surface with it on a lightly dampened lint-free cloth, working with the grain, and let it dry 15–30 minutes before oiling.
A tack cloth is a reasonable alternative for picking up dust — but traditional wax-impregnated tack cloths can leave a faint residue that interferes with the bond. If you use one, choose a residue-free type; otherwise the Raw Wood Cleaner is the surer bet. Either way: if you sand again after cleaning, you must clean again before Rubio.
⚠ Key rule — No residue or contaminants right before Rubio
Any silicone or wax residue on the surface — or a residue-leaving cleaner — will wreck Rubio's bond and cause a blotchy sheen.
Fix: clean with Raw Wood Cleaner (or a residue-free tack cloth), wait 15–30 minutes, and make sure the surface feels dry — not cool or damp — before any oil goes on.
🛠 Tips
- Prefer Rubio Raw Wood Cleaner — it lifts dust without leaving residue.
- If you use a tack cloth instead, pick a residue-free one.
- If you sand after cleaning, clean again.
- Wait 15–30 minutes after cleaning; the surface must feel dry, not cool or damp.
